Looking back on 30 years of the brand, NAJO founder Jo Tory reveals her treasures in the planning, plus the poetry of coming full-circle. In case you missed them, here’s part 1 and part 2 of Jo’s incredible tale.

Heading forward, looking back

The essence of NAJO is storytelling: empowering women to tell their story through style. So it’s fitting to share the NAJO story with the women who wear our designs every day. Also, looking back at the past helps us to understand where NAJO is headed in the future. And like any great story, this one comes full circle, back to where it began: Mexico.

A return to Mexico

Earlier this year, I went to visit Nando. After all, he was the reason I first visited Mexico, which will forever be NAJO’s heartland. So it was great to reconnect with him after almost 30 years,and talk about old times. Mexico has changed so much since then. For one thing, fine artisan-made jewellery is becoming increasingly rare, which is sad. It’s so important to celebrate the artistry of these makers otherwise we risk losing them.

Yet while so much has changed, there is so much that has remained consistent over the years. Women still love NAJO’s signature pieces, sophisticated silver jewellery that speaks of worldly confidence and an eye for craftsmanship.

Bright (and shiny) things to come

There’s plenty more on the horizon, too. NAJO will continue to release new collections twice a year as we have always done. I also want to start working with some different metals, maybe even create a line of fine jewellery in gold and precious stones as well.

For the 30 Year Anniversary collection we used 18-carat gold with silver for the first time, and it would be great to extend this idea further with some more luxurious two-tone pieces.

Design-wise, I’d love to collaborate with creatives from other industries, such as fashion, industrial design or architecture. We ran our inaugural Design Competition this year, which was really successful, and I would love to continue to foster the work of young designers in Australia and New Zealand.
